The Academy has spoken. The winners of the 95th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 12 March, have been announced and the golden statues awarded to the worthy recipients. The ‘red’ carpet, this year champagne in colour, has been rolled away for another year – and the #OscarBuzz conversations are now focused around the worthy winners and the unlucky losers.
No matter who walked off with the celebrated Oscars on Sunday evening (US time), the fact is that excellence in film is the overall winner, both at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, and on the big screen at Ster-Kinekor cinemas. With many of the Oscar winners and nominated films currently showing on circuit, you can go and watch them, decide for yourself and join the conversation.
The big winner on the night was… Everything Everywhere All At Once. This multiverse fantasy film swept the boards with seven Oscars from its 11 nominations at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony. The film won the Oscars in five of the top six categories, including for Best Picture, Best Director (writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are only the third duo ever to win the Oscar in this category), Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, plus the golden statues for Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay.
This quirky film is about a fractured family swept up in an interdimensional adventure. It focuses on an aging Chinese immigrant who is swept up in an insane adventure, where she alone can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could have led.
“Following its multiple Oscar nominations and now being a multi award-winning film, Everything Everywhere All At Once has been brought back to the big screen and is showing at select Ster-Kinekor complexes around South Africa,” says Lynne Wylie, Head of Marketing for Ster-Kinekor.
Another Oscar-winning performance is delivered by the remarkable actor Brendan Fraser. His transformation into the lead role in The Whale earned him the Best Actor award. The film also won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
The award for Best Costume Design was awarded to Ruth E Carter for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, who previously won an Oscar for her work on the first Black Panther film.
James Cameron’s hit sequel Avatar: The Way of Water won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
Host for the 95th Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel, welcomed the nominees in the audience and their films being seen “the way you intended them to be seen, in a theatre”.
With Oscar fever still in the air, Ster-Kinekor invites you to watch these winning films at select cinemas countrywide and join the #OscarBuzz conversation.
