A locally produced, written, directed, and self-funded short film nominated at 2 of the largest international gatherings for urban film will screen at the Joburg Film Festival.
‘A Home Is Not a House’, was screened and nominated as Best International Short film at the Miami Urban Film Festival. The film was also nominated as best international film at the International Black Film Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. The Afrikaans-language film is an adaptation of Lester Walbrugh’s short story (Homeful) from his collection of short stories published by Karavan Press.
The Joburg Film Festival (JFF) in partnership with the MultiChoice Group is to take place from 11 – 16 March 2025. This year’s theme ‘The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories’ will explore the profound interconnectedness of our shared human experiences and the timeless value of storytelling.
‘A Home Is Not a House’ stars local actors Liande’ Valentyn, Curtley Pitt and Dustin Beck as three homeless friends who get to spend a few nights in a beach house on the Atlantic Seaboard. They settle in to enjoy the luxury but are forced to face questions of identity and redefine the meaning of family and home.
“I am honoured that our project found a way to cross borders. I am more excited that it found away home.” – Lester Walbrugh.

Audiences are invited to explore the essence of connection as the Joburg Film Festival celebrate ‘The Golden Thread’—an elegant reminder of the ties that bind us all, a recurring symbol that represents universal themes, emotions and truths found within the world’s most compelling stories.
“In what seems to be divisive times, storytelling provides an undeniable tool to bring diverse groups of people together and to remind us that we have more in common than that which keeps us apart. We are very excited that SA audiences will get the opportunity to see our film at the Joburg Film Festival” said director Earl Kopeledi who also wrote and directed the award winning ‘2 Thirds of a Man’ released in 2022.
A Home is not a house will screen on Wednesday 12 March at 16h30 at the Forge in Braamfontein.
