Lydenburg Smelter Awards Portable Skills Certificates To 72 Community Members

Lydenburg Smelter acknowledges the importance of skills development of the communities within which it operates. We are driven by equipping the people in our communities to grow to be self-sustainable. It is therefore against this background that today 13 March 2020, Lydenburg Smelter hosted the Portable Skills Certification Ceremony where we awarded 72 community members who successfully completed our portable skills programmes which we trained them in.

To achieve this project, Lydenburg Smelter identified and implemented various portable skills programmes that are available to the residents of our host community. It was important for this project to specifically offer portable skills because these can be transferred from one job to another or from industry to industry thus, giving the trained community members limitless opportunities.

In addition to the skills certificates, Lydenburg Smelter also gifted each and every one of the 72 recipients with a toolbox – this is to enable the community members to be able use the skills they learnt elsewhere in the community and where possible even start their own small business. “To Lydenburg Smelter, the Portable Skills Certification Ceremony is not only to reward the trainees for their hard work in completing this programme but to give them confidence to enter the job market and where possible, even create their own job opportunities.” – Lydenburg Smelter representative.

The following are Portable Skills Programmes the recipients took part in:

  • Bricklaying Skills Programme – This is a 20 days skills programme
  • Plastering Skill Programme – This is a 20 days skills programme
  • Plumbing Skills Programme – This is a 45 days skills programme
  • Tiling Skills Programme – This is a 20 days skills programme
  • Painting Skills Programme – This is a 20 days skills programme
  • Carpentry Skills Programme – This is a 20 days skills programme

“We are really proud to have made this opportunity possible for the people in the communities we operate in. What this ceremony means to us is that we are making progress in fighting social ills such as unemployment and poverty because as Lydenburg Smelter we have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that as we progress, we do not leave others behind but instead work towards, progressing together.” – Lydenburg Smelter representative.
