Keeping up with the Kandasamys, breaks SA movie records

The Durban film Kandasamys: The Wedding, the sequel to South Africa’s 2017 box office hit Keeping up with the Kandasamys, has once again broken movie records. Opening last weekend, it grossed an incredible R5.7m across cinemas nationwide. With nearly 100 000 movie-goers watching the movie during the Easter long-weekend, Kandasamys: The Wedding pushed out Hollywood blockbusters Shazam!, Little and Captain Marvel securing its place at the top of the box office in South Africa.

Jayan Moodley, director and co-writer has been overwhelmed by the response to the movie, saying that the sequel belonged to the fans. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this movie is for the fans! South Africa’s support for the Kandasamys is phenomenal. They’ve owned this film and it is because of them that the Kandasamys is such a huge brand.”

The reviews from critics and fans alike have applauded the authenticity of the performances of its cast; the witty humour; the depth of the story and the awarded-winning cinematography. With cinemas being sold out show after show on Sunday and Easter Monday, site managers had to hastily open new screenings unable to keep up with the demand to watch the sequel.

Kandasamys: The Wedding which has appealed to South Africans of all backgrounds because of its universal themes will now be showing in 45 cinemas from this weekend – this increase in the number of sites by the distributors after opening weekend is not usual but prompted by the demand throughout the country.
