VOLKSWAGEN USHER IN A NEW ERA AT T-CROSS CITY

It was a weekend of music, comedy, food and newfound friendships as thousands of fans flocked to the launch of Volkswagen’s T-Cross City – an ambition launch that saw the brand build a city – to launch their car.

‘We’d anticipated a phenomenal launch’, commented Meredith Kelly, head of marketing at Volkswagen, ‘but what none of us could have predicted was the expression on the faces of our visitors as they walked over the bridge and saw what was before them. No one had quite anticipated the enormity of the set and what a wonder it would be. It really was very impressive, and the activities spoke directly to our target consumer’.

The 6 000m² city was constructed as giant film set at Montecasino’s outdoor area, VW’s city was filled with numerous experiences all set up in a circular city format, the experiences to choose from included a comedy club that was specially curated by Goliath and Goliath and Parker’s.

The exciting line-up of comedians included the likes of Jason, Donovan and Nicholas Goliath, Nina Hastie, Tats Nkonzo, Ntosh Madlingozi, Robby Collins, Yaaseen Baarnes, Carl Weber, KG Mokgadi, Tracey-Lee Oliver, Gilli Apter, Shanray van Wyk and AK Dans from South Sudan. Special surprise performances included Schalk Bezuidenhout, Lindy Johnson and Tsitsi Chiumya.

Music fans were treated to phenomenal music experiences from downtown Johannesburg’s The Marabi Jazz Club, who hosted a pop-up at T-Cross City along with DJ Kent who brought his WEEKent and Friends brand to the city’s rooftop. The stellar line-up of DJ’s included DJ Speedsta, DJ Milkshake, DJ Fresh, Kid Fonque, Chris Beatz, Luna and DJ Kent himself.

Celebrity chef, Lesego Semenya aka LesDaChef, tantalized the taste buds of thousands at the Gourmet Food market – curated by him – with his wood braai demos of crayfish tails with pulled snoek and savoury crepes.

Sport fans were kept entertained at the Fives Futbol pitch that saw a weekend long tournament being won by the Orlando Pirates Fives Team who were crowned champions of T-Cross City.

Joining in on the fun were Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United midfielder, Dean Furman, and former Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeping legend, Brian Baloyi.
