Planet Fitness has joined forces with Sandton City to host the 2019 Discovery 947 Pre-Training Ride Joburg Pre Cycle Cyclethon, in aid of The Smile Foundation and The Summit For Hope campaign. This year’s Cyclethon takes place in Sandton City on 26th October, in preparation for the 947-cycle challenge. It also marks the 24th year of Planet Fitness’s involvement in the Cyclethon.
This will be the first indoor Discovery 947 Challenge pre-training ride, with full visuals and commentary provided by Planet Fitness. It will serve as both a preview of the actual 947 Challenge route to cycling novices, and an indoor training ride for seasoned cyclists. The bikes which Planet Fitness provides are specialist ICG bikes, which calibrate the level/gear of a rider, including the wattage output, calories burnt and intensity levels.
Non-profit organisation The Smile Foundation helps children in South Africa with any facial abnormalities to receive corrective surgery. This includes children suffering from repairable facial deformities. The Summit For Hope campaign aims to help students reach their full potential through education; supporting children holistically with accommodation, meals and mentorship.
Manny Rivera, CEO of Planet Fitness, says: “Planet Fitness believes in the incredible work which both The Smile Foundation and The Summit For Hope carry out in South Africa. Initiatives such as these are incredibly important for nation-building and Planet Fitness is proud to have a long-standing association with The Smile Foundation.”
Hedley Lewis, CEO for The Smile Foundation says: “The Smile Foundation is incredibly grateful for the support which Planet Fitness has given us over the years, and for making the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg Cyclethon possible by donating their bikes and expertise. We would like to encourage as many cyclists and sports enthusiasts as possible to take part in this year’s event.”
Various celebrities and DJs will show their support and provide entertainment at the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg Cyclethon, including Jordan Harris/HAPOLY and Dekster. Steve Saunders, official MC for the Discovery 947 event, will also MC the Cyclethon.
