eThekwini Municipality has closed Durban’s public beaches promenade during this level 4 of the lockdown regulations, the city announced on Friday.
This is after a large number of joggers were spotted in the promenade. Today marks the second day of level 4 in terms of the national lockdown, which permits some activities to take place due to relaxation of some of the regulations.
On Wednesday, Minister Dlamini Zuma announced that level 4 allows people to embark on exercises such jogging, walking and cycling only around 6 – 9am within a 5 kilometres radius of their homes.
However that didn’t stop people in Durban to take it to beach to the beach front.
This pushed Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda to take swift actions, “We are not going to take any chances. Everyone need to be mindful of the fact that the city is the epicentre of this pandemic. We are going to embark on a deep cleaning and sanitizing operation of the entire facility before we open it to the public. We are appealing to our residents to bear with us and we apologize for the inconvenience. Yes, residents have been yearning for jogging and cycling on the promenade but we cannot dice with their lives”, said Kaunda.
According to Kaunda the safety of residents comes first.
eThekwini Municipality is expected to sanitize and disinfect the facility to ensure safety for all.
The promenade is expected to continue operating tomorrow under strict measures.
