According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thailand continues to offer South African travellers the chance to enjoy many of the experiences associated with a premium holiday, from beautiful accommodation and island escapes to memorable food and wellness experiences, while still staying within budget.
“Luxury is not always about choosing the most expensive option,” says Ahman Mad Adam, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Dubai Office. “For South African travellers, Thailand offers the opportunity to enjoy beautiful accommodation, great food, wellness experiences and rich cultural discoveries while still making thoughtful choices about the overall travel budget.”
Spend on what matters, save on what doesn’t
If you’re trying to create a more luxurious travel experience without overspending, it helps to decide upfront what matters most to you.
That might mean booking a hotel with a beautiful pool or sea view while choosing local restaurants and street-food markets over fine dining every night. Or spending a little extra on a memorable island excursion while relying on affordable local transport for shorter trips.
Thailand makes finding that balance much easier. Everyday experiences such as local food, market shopping and transport remain accessible, leaving more room in the budget for the experiences travellers value most.
Build small indulgences into the trip
Often, it’s the smaller moments that make a holiday memorable, not necessarily the most expensive ones.
Thailand’s long-standing wellness culture means a massage or spa treatment doesn’t have to be a once-off holiday splurge. A foot massage after a day of sightseeing, a few relaxing hours at a local spa or an evening wandering through a bustling night market can all make a trip feel a little more special without adding significantly to the overall cost.

Thailand’s green season brings vibrant scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere in many destinations, with fewer crowds than during the busiest travel months. Although rain is part of the season and travellers should plan accordingly, it can also be a great time to find more affordable accommodation options.
For budget-conscious travellers, that extra value can free up money for the experiences that matter most, whether that’s an island-hopping excursion, a special meal or a few extra days away.
Look beyond the usual hotspots
While Bangkok and Phuket continue to be favourites among first-time visitors, many travellers soon discover that some of Thailand’s most memorable experiences lie beyond its best-known destinations.
Krabi, for example, offers striking limestone landscapes, beautiful beaches and easy access to nearby islands. This broader view of Thailand was also highlighted during the recent Amazing Thailand Roadshow to South Africa 2026, which connected Thai tourism businesses with local travel partners and showcased the diversity of experiences available to South African travellers.
“Many people arrive in Thailand for the first time through places they already know, but what often brings them back is discovering just how much more there is to explore,” says Adam. “Different regions offer different food, landscapes and cultural experiences, which means every visit can feel completely different from the last.”
As travel costs continue to rise, value is becoming just as important as the destination itself. For South Africans looking to make their travel budget stretch further, Thailand remains a destination where everyday experiences can still feel affordable. Whether it’s a beachfront stay, a meal at a local market or a relaxing massage after a day of exploring, travellers often find they can enjoy more of what makes a holiday memorable without spending more than they planned.
