The African National Congress (ANC) in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has redeployed two of its biggest municipalities, eThekwini and uMsunduzi. These announcements follow a two-day Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting that took place at the Coastlands hotel in Durban.
The PEC reached this consensus after studying a report by the Provincial Working Committee (PWC) and agreed that urgent steps need to be taken in order to see or have improvement in various municipalities.
Provincial Secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli says the PEC decided that these two municipalities need urgent attention.
Ntuli says “The PEC also decided that all ANC members serving in Executive Committees (EXCO) of both municipalities, respectively, should, with Immediate effect, be redeployed.” He adds, “This has nothing to do with the charges Zandile Gumede is facing, if it was, the Umsunduzi Mayor Themba Njilo wouldn’t be affected.”
Njilo says that, the PEC being their officials, have called them this morning to let them know that the work they were deployed for, has come to an end. And they have to wait for letters confirming where to go from here. He seems ready to go anywhere the ANC deploys him, “This is not a good or bad decision however the ANC has spoken, and as a member of the ANC, I’m prepared to do what they say I should do and I will improve in that.”
Zandile Gumede didn’t want to make any comments on these changes.
According the to the ANC, the PEC mandated the PWC to ensure that all these vacancies caused by this decision are filled within seven days, both municipalities will remain without Mayors until then.
